This page describes known and discovered problems with
the final NEAR deliveries as of
June 11, 2003.
MSI - Multi-Spectral Imager Data (Volume names beginning with "NI")
Level 1B
- VOLDESC.CAT does contain all DATA_SET_IDs on the disk but the catalog
file msifilds.cat, does describe CALIB/BANDPASS files only for level
2 CAL MSI data.
Level 2
- The DATA_SET_ID in the top-level CALIB files may not be correct.
- There is no TARGET_NAME in the CALIB file labels.
- VOLDESC.CAT does not contain all the DSIDs on the volume.
- In the DOCUMENT directory, the MSIDEFINITIONS.TXT file has both
an attached and a detached label.
- The required volume index files do not have the correct name.
Level 3
- VOLDESC.CAT has too many DSIDs - more than on the actual volume..
- Required index files have the wrong names.
- NOTE: The BROWSE directory contains junk files apparently left
over from data preparation.
NLR - Laser Ranger Finder Data (Volume names beginning with "NL")
Level 1B
- The NLCOLL_1001/AAREADME.TXT file was apparently cloned from MSI.
It contains several references to the MSI collection and the volume
directory structures look like MSI's.
Levels 2 and 3
- The NLCOLL_3001/AAREADME.TXT file was apparently cloned from MSI.
It contains several references to the MSI collection and the volume
directory structures look like MSI's.
- NOTE: Level 2 and 3 data are contained on the same physical
volumes. The data reside in high-level directories called
/level2/ and /level3/ instead of the PDS standard /data/
directory.
NIS - Infrared Spectrometer Data (Volume names beginning with "NN")
Level 1B
No known problems in the data files.
Levels 2 and 3
- No known problems in the data files.
- NOTE: Labels contain non-SI values in some of the UNIT fields
(for example, "MILLIAMPERE", "DEGREE CELSIUS").
- NOTE: Duration times are misleading. Duration includes data spectra,
instrument rest, and dark spectra (if darks were interleaved).
PDS-SBN calculated the exposure time for data spectra only
and added it to new Level 2 data products on the NXCOLL_3001
CD:
/NNEROS_2003, the revised NIXEL database,
/NNEROS_2004, the NIXEL data split by UTC, and
/NNEROS_2005, the NIXEL data split by mission subphase.
MAG - Magnetometer Data (Volume names beginning with "NM")
Level 1B
No known problems in the data files.
Level 2
- Data set catalog file "magl2ds.cat" on each of the
mission phase volumes on /NMCOLL_3001/ contain a typo
in a REFERENCE_KEY_ID value: "ANDERSONETAL2001" is erroneously
spelled "ANDERS0NETAL2001" (i.e., with a zero rather than
an 'O' in the author's name).
XRS/GRS - X-Ray/Gamma-Ray Spectrometer Data
(Volume names beginning with "NX")
Levels 1B, 2, and 3
No known problems in the data files.
Radio Science Data (Volume names beginning with "NR")
Levels 1B through 5
No known problems in the data files.
SPICE Data (Volume names beginning with "NG")
- The text instrument kernel for NLR, /DATA/IK/NLR04.TI, has
PC line terminators of carriage returns and linefeeds. It should
have Unix line terminators of linefeeds only. This kernel will
only work under a PC environment. PDS-SBN archives SPICE kernel
data files to be used under a UNIX environment. See the NEAR SPICE
aareadme file.
