| NEAR Data - Volume Naming Scheme |
NEAR data reside on a mixture of CDs and DVDs. The names of each CD or DVD volume follow the scheme, Nipppp_dnnn, where:
G = SPICE (Spacecraft, Planet, Instrument, C-matrix, Events) Geometry Data for Eros Orbit
L = Laser Range Finder (NLR)
M = Magnetometer (MAG)
N = Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIS)
R = Radio Science (RS)
X = X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (XRS,GRS)
I = Multispectral Imager (MSI)
S = Summary; This code is used when CDs from more than one instrument collected on one DVD
CRU1 = Cruise 1
ERTH = Earth Swing-By
CRU2 = Cruise 2
MATH = Mathilde Encounter
CRU3 = Cruise 3
ERFB = Eros Flyby
CRU4 = Cruise 4
EROS = Eros Orbital
ERSF = Eros on Surface
COLL = Multiple Phases; This code is used when CDs for several different phases, such as ERTH and CRU2, are collected on one DVD
CRUZ = Multiple Cruise Phases; This code is used when CDs for several cruise phases, such as CRU1 and CRU2, are collected on one DVD
0 = uncalibrated data (level 1B) on CD
1 = uncalibrated data (level 1B) on DVD
2 = calibrated data (level 2) on CD
3 = calibrated data (level 2) on DVD
4 = higher-level (3+) data on CD
5 = higher-level (3+) data on DVD
Description of data levels:
Level 1B: that have been sorted by instrument data types and instrument modes. Data are in scientifically useful forms, such as FITS images or individual spectra. These data are not calibrated.
Level 2: Data with calibration and corrections applied to yield data in scientific units.
Level 3: Higher-level data products developed for specific scientific investigations.
Series Volume Name level 1B, CDs NIEROS_0001 to NIEROS_0101 level 1B, DVDs NIEROS_1001 to NIEROS_1017 level 2 (calibrated), CDs NIEROS_2001 to NIEROS_2330 level 2 (calibrated), DVDs NIEROS_3001 to NIEROS_3055 higher level (3+), CDs NIEROS_4001 to NIEROS_4bbb higher level (3+), DVDs NIEROS_5001 to NIEROS_5bbb
Another example is the DVD named NSEROS_1001. This DVD is a summary disk that contains level 1B (uncalibrated) data for a several instruments: NLR, MAG, and NIS.
