Notes on Preparing Catalog Objects for Ground-Based Data

This page provides an overview of how to deal with catalog objects for ground-based observations, with specific details for the SBN standard practices.

Information on SBN conventions for determining TARGET_NAME values for small bodies is available here.

Ground-based data obtained directly in support of a spacecraft mission should be associated with that specific mission. Ground-based data archived as general support for space missions should be associated with the "Support Archives" mission.

A generic instrument is used when only the instrument type is known, or when various instruments of the same type were used in collecting the data.
An instrument is listed as decommissioned when it is believed that it has been removed from all known instrument hosts and is no longer available for use.
