Lowell 72in Observations of 9P/Tempel 1

This volume contains broadband R images and derived photometry of comet 9P/Tempel 1. The images were obtained by Marc Buie using the 72-inch Perkins telescope at Lowell Observatory over the period 28 Sep 200 to 14 Jan 2001.

The data set has been broken into three parts for those who wish to download the entire thing (some 3.5Gb) and have a connection that's up to the task:

• Catalog, document, calibration and overall results (36Mb zip file)
• Raw data files (1.6 Gb tar file)
• Reduced data files (2.1 Gb tar file)

Catalog Files

Catalog files contain the overview information and parameters used in loading the PDS central catalog, specifically, or for developing other interfaces to the data outside of PDS. The information they contain, particularly in their descriptive text fields, should be clear, complete, and understandable to a research user who is not necessarily a mission or instrument specialist.

These files are located in the catalog/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the catinfo.txt file.

  Target catalog files are also provided for the calibration targets in this data set, mainly to fulfill PDS requirements. These can be found in the target subdirectory.

Documentation Files

In addition to the small text files located throughout the volume to describe directory contents, some specific documents are provided to assist with understanding the data and processing involved. These files are located in the document/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the docinfo.txt file.

The documentation files provided are divided into subdirectories by type, and in each case the file names begin with the relevant observing date:

• JPEG finder charts are located in the finders subdirectory. The finder_charts.lbl file describes their contents.
• JPEG scans of hand-written observing logs arelocated in the obslogs subdirectory. The obs_logs.lbl file provides a brief description.
• ASCII files containing the photometry log tables are in the phot/photometry_log subdirectory. The photometry_logs.lbl label file provides details of the contents of the various files.
• Notes and standard star lists are provided in ASCII text files in the phot/photometry_notes subdirectory, with a brief description in the photometry_notes.lbl label file.

Data Files

The data directory is divided into three subdirectories:

• data/raw contains the raw FITS files, further divided by date of observation.
• data/reduced contains the reduced FITS images, also divided by date of observation.
• data/results contains ASCII tables of photometric measurements, further subdivided by categories.

Index Files

The index/ directory contains an index into the data files included in this data set.

• indxinfo.txt describes the directory contents.
• index.tab is a CSV file containing the index table. (PDS label)
