Deep Impact: Surface Temperature Maps of 9P/Tempel 1

Status: In Peer Review

This data set contains two-dimensional infrared thermal maps of the surface of comet 9P/Tempel 1. The maps were derived from three spatially resolved scans of the nucleus acquired by the Deep Impact High Resolution Infrared Spectrometer (HRII) about 19, 12, and 5 minutes before the impact on 4 July 2005. A high-resolution, 120-m/pixel, thermal composite map is also included. Surface temperatures were derived from 1.0- to 4.0-micron data and ranged from 272K to 336K +/- 7K. This data set also includes the incidence and emission angle maps (mu0 and mu) associated with each thermal map and a table of temperatures assigned to plates in the Tempel 1 shape model that were illuminated and visible near the time of impact.

An overview of the volume contents is provided in aareadme.txt.

Catalog Files

Catalog files contain the overview information and parameters used in loading the PDS central catalog, specifically, or for developing other interfaces to the data outside of PDS. The information they contain, particularly in their descriptive text fields, should be clear, complete, and understandable to a research user who is not necessarily an instrument specialist.

These files are located in the catalog/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the catinfo.txt file.

Documentation Files

In addition to the small text files located throughout the volume to describe directory contents, there are specific documents provided to assist with understanding the data involved. The files are located in the document/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the docinfo.txt file.

A deconvolved HRI visible CCD image is provided as context for the thermal maps in this data set:

Data Files

The temperature maps (FITS files) are located in the data/ subdirectory. The PDS labels are in separate files from the data.

Index Files

The index/ directory contains the required PDS index into the files in the data directory, as well as the checksum file.
