Deep Impact 9P/Tempel Encounter Calibrated MRI (Medium-Resolution CCD) Images

This volume contains version 2.0 of calibrated images of comet 9P/Tempel 1 acquired by the Deep Impact Medium Resolution Instrument Visible CCD (MRI) during the encounter phase of the mission. These data were collected from May 1 through July 6, 2005 (day of year 121 through 187). The impact with 9P/Tempel 1 occurred on July 4, 2005.

Version 2.0 includes improved geometry and three types of reduced data RADREV (units of radiance, not cleaned and reversible), RAD (units of radiance, cleaned), and unitless I/F (radiance image divided by solar irradiance, cleaned). Only RADREV data were included in version 1.0.

The observational data have been broken into physical volumes by reduction type (RADREV, RAD, and I/F) for downloading. Each volume includes catalog, index, calibration, and support files.

Catalog Files

Catalog files contain the overview information and parameters used in loading the PDS central catalog, specifically, or for developing other interfaces to the data outside of PDS. The information they contain, particularly in their descriptive text fields, should be clear, complete, and understandable to a research user who is not necessarily a mission or instrument specialist.

These files are located in the catalog/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the catinfo.txt file.

Calibration Files

This directory, calib/, contains the files used to calibrate the raw data of comet 9P/Tempel 1. The calibration files are grouped into the following subdirectories and are briefly describe in the calinfo.txt file.

• abscalvs - Lookup tables of VIS absolute calibration constants for each filter
• adclut - Dummy table to correct for ADC uneven bit weighting (input values equal output values; required by the calibration pipeline)
• badpix - Bad pixel maps for each instrument mode
• bias - Bias correction maps for each instrument mode
• decomprs - Lossy lookup tables, numbered from 0 to 3, used to decompress raw data files that were compressed onboard the spacecraft
• drkmodel - Master dark frames for each instrument mode
• filters - Transmission profile table for each filter
• flat - Flat fields for each instrument mode and filter combination
• psf - Point-spread function files for each filter
• xtalk - Cross-talk gain maps for each instrument mode

Data Files

The FITS image data are grouped by reduction type, then by date of observation with subdirectories named by sequential day number:

• RADREV data were reversibly calibrated, but were not cleaned, and have units of radiance W/(m**2 um sr).
• RAD data were cleaned and have units of radiance W/(m**2 um sr).
• I/F data were cleaned and have unitless (radiance image divided by the solar spectral brightness at the target's heliocentric distance, then multiplied by pi).

The RAD and I/F data were partially cleaned: bad and missing pixels were interplated over. Cosmic rays were not removed.

Browse Facility

The browse directory is a web site that provides an easy method for viewing JPEG versions of the RADREV data products in the data/ directory. An HTML main page links to daily HTML files which display thumbnails and full-frame JPEGs for each data product. The root of this directory is here.
