Deep Impact Mission Thermal-Vacuum 2 HRII/HRIV Instrument Data

This volume contains images acquired during the preflight thermal-vacuum test (TV2) of the High Resolution Imager's Infrared Spectrometer (HRII) and Visible CCD (HRIV) for the Deep Impact Mission. These instruments reside on the Flyby spacecraft. Data from TV2 cover the time period of 15 August 2002 through 03 September 2002. TV2 was conducted at Ball Aerospace.

The data total about 12Gb. The individual day directories are presented here as separate tar files for those with sufficient interest and bandwidth to download them in their entirety.

Catalog Files

Catalog files contain the overview information and parameters used in loading the PDS central catalog, specifically, or for developing other interfaces to the data outside of PDS. The information they contain, particularly in their descriptive text fields, should be clear, complete, and understandable to a research user who is not necessarily a mission or instrument specialist. The mission, instrument host, and instrument catalog files for this archive are intended to be brief because the project team is pursuing permissions from Space Science Reviews to include recently submitted papers in all Deep Impact archival data sets.

These files are located in the catalog/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the catinfo.txt file.

Documentation Files

In addition to the small text files located throughout the volume to describe directory contents, some specific documents are provided to assist with understanding the data and processing involved. These files are located in the document/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the docinfo.txt file.

In the imagelog/ subdirectory:

• tv2_hri.xls contains the HRII/HRIV image log created during TV2 in Excel spreadsheet format. Image parameters, such as mode and experiment type, were recorded. The log also provides a summary of the experiments performed each day and a list of the experiment types with descriptions. .
• tv2_hri.asc contains a comma-delimited, ASCII version of the tv2_hri.xls file.
• tv2_hri.lbl contains the PDS label for both the .xls and .asc files.

  In the pdsdd/ subdirectory:

  • pdsdd_di.full is local Planetary Science data dictionary listing for for the Deep Impact thermal-vacuum data sets, including TV2. Locally-defined keywords for Deep Impact have the prefix 'DEEPIMPACT:' in the data labels. Definitions and values of local keywords found in the dat dictionary. The dictionary is ASCII text.
  • pdsdd_di.idx is index file for the Deep Impact local data dictionary. The dictionary index is ASCII text.
  • pdsdd_di.lbl contains the PDS label for the .asc file.

  In the reports/ subdirectory:

  • report_yyyymmdd.asc contains 13 reports produced by test personnel at the end of most test days. Each report summarizes the activity for that day. Reports are in ASCII text format.
  • reports.lbl contains the PDS label for all report files in this subdirectory.

  • summary_slide#.png files summarize the initial results from TV2, as presented to the Deep Impact science team.
  • summary.lbl contains the PDS label for the summary report's PNG files in this subdirectory.

  In the templog/ subdirectory:

  • temp_ext_hri.txt is an IDL function that extracts data from the HRII/HRIV temperature log (templog_tv2_hri.tab, see Data Files below)
  • temp_ext_hri.lbl contains the PDS label.

  Data Files

  Data files reside in the data/ subdirectory:

  HRII spectral image data from TV2 are grouped by instrument (HRII) then by test day of year in the data/hrii/2002/ subdirectory. Data are 2-dimensional FITS images, identified by the extension ".fit". Each FITS file has a detached PDS label, identified by the extension ".fit". There are 13520 FITS images (10.3 GB) from TV2:

  HRIV image data from TV2 are grouped by instrument (HRIV) then by test day of year in the data/hriv/2002/ subdirectory. Data are 2-dimensional FITS images, identified by the extension ".fit". Each FITS file has a detached PDS label, identified by the extension ".fit". There are 775 FITS images (1.5 GB) from TV2:

  Temperatures for various components of the HRII/HRIV instruments as well as the MRI instrument were automatically recorded, approximately every 5 minutes, by two thermister monitors. One monitor recorded 10 of the 13 HRI temperatures; the second monitor recorded the remaining 3 HRI temperatures and all of the MRI temperatures. The resulting temperature data were grouped by HRII/HRIV and MRI and stored in fixed-width, comma-separated, ASCII tables with detached PDS labels.

  • templog_tv2_hri.tab is the temperature table for the HRII/HRIV instruments.
  • templog_tv2_hri.lbl is the label.

  Calibration Files

  The calib/ directory contains fixed calibration data for the components of the HRIV and MRI instruments. The directory contents are described by the calinfo.txt file.

  • calib/hriv contains one transmission profile table for each of the 9 HRIV filters. The tables, *.tab, are a fixed-width, comma-delimited ASCII tables with detached PDS labels, *.lbl.

  Index Files

  The index/ directory contains an index into the data files included on this volume. All index files are fixed-width, comma-delimited ASCII tables.

  • indxinfo.txt describes the directory contents.
  • index.tab is a a fixed-width, delimited index table. For image data on this volume, table entries contain useful image parameters, such as instrument mode and experiment type.
  • index.lbl is the label for the index file.
