Deep Space 1 Plasma Wave Spectrometer (IDS) Data of 19P/Borrelly 1

Status: Archived

This volume contains plasma wave spectrometer data from the Ion propulsion subsystem Diagnostic Subsystem (IDS) flown aboard the Deep Space 1 spacecraft. The data are observations of Comet 19P/Borrelly 1 obtained during the flyby of 22 September 2001.

An overview of the volume contents is provided in the aareadme.txt file.

Catalog Files

Catalog files contain the overview information and parameters used in loading the PDS central catalog, specifically, or for developing other interfaces to the data outside of PDS. The information they contain, particularly in their descriptive text fields, should be clear, complete, and understandable to a research user who is not necessarily a mission or instrument specialist.

These files are located in the catalog/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the catinfo.txt file.

Documentation Files

In addition to the small text files located throughout the volume to describe directory contents, some specific documents are provided to assist with understanding the data and processing involved. These files are located in the document/ subdirectory. The directory contents are described by the docinfo.txt file.

Two additional documents are supplied with the data:

  1. First, the DS1 technology validation report Ion Propulsion Subsystem Environmental Effects on Deep Space 1: Initial Results from the IPS Diagnostic Subsystem. This report is provided in two formats, PDF (2.6Mb) and ASCII (223Kb) with separate JPEG files for the figure and images. One PDS label describes them both. The individual JPEG files for the figures are in the document/ subdirectory.
  2. Second, and instrument and calibration paper entitled Description and Calibration Approach for DS1 IPS Diagnostics Sensors: Plasma Wave Spectrometer Channel. This is provided in three formats: the original MS Word file (237Kb); a PDF file (1.3Mb); and an ASCII text file with the figures in separate JPEG files. There is one PDS label for the three of them. The JPEG files for the graphics are in the document/backgrnd directory.

Data Files

The data are all located in the data/ subdirectory. The data are presented as ASCII tables, each with its own PDS label in a separate file of the same name, but with the extension .lbl.

Index Files

This directory contains an index into the data files in the data/ directory.
