      Instrument Overview

      The Intensified Dissector Scanner (IDS) instrument, formerly            
      used at the Cassegrain F/17.7 focus of the Harlan J. Smith 2.7m         
      Telescope at McDonald Observatory, was decommissioned some time         
      after March 1988 and before October 1994.  The information              
      presented below was gleaned from Cochran, et al. (1992)                 
      [COCHRANETAL1992].                                                      
                                                                              
      The IDS was a dual aperture spectrograph with variable apertures        
      fixed 52 arcsec apart on an east/west line.  Computer-controlled        
      beam switching was available to alternate imaging through both          
      apertures.
