The data contained in the file was obtained by the UVS instrument during the impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet Fragment G with Jupiter. The analysis of these raw data is reported in Geophysical Research Letters, Vol 22, NO. 12, pages 1565-1568, June 15,1995, by C.W. Hord, et al. The time specified is spacecraft event time; to convert to Earth Observation Time (EOT), add the net OWLT (29m:31s). Record 0 is the time scale. Each position holds the number of seconds from the start of the RIM (Real-time IMaging cycles, =60.667sec) for the corresponding position in a data record. The header values of this record are zeros. Records 1 to 9 contain data records. The data starts at position 10 (byte 40). Each record contains 14 spectra. Each spectra contains 528 values followed by spare words, whose value is -1. These spare words maintain the correct time during which housekeeping and grating stepping was occurring. Each spectra is therefore 572 values covering 4.333 sec or 6.5 SCLK minor frames. Header info for data records: 0 = rim timetag (Spacecraft Event Time in Spacecraft Clock, SCLK) 1-5 contains the SCET converted to UTC format; value is at the s/c 1 = year 2 = day of year 3 = hours 4 = minutes 5 = seconds Note: Record 4 is timetagged 2490635:00 and record 5 is 2490639:00. This three RIM gap is the result of a change in the playback requested by NIMS. At this time, there is no data for record 8 (2490642). Each of the spectra are 528 log-decompressed values from the F-channel, on a single grating position at 292 nm. The file structure is shown diagramatically below.
