PUBLICATION_DATE = 2003-10-30 /* Peer Review Date */ END_OBJECT = TEXT END Overview ======== This volume contains images of comet 9P/Tempel, from its 1983 apparition, as derived from 12-, 25-, 60-, and 100-micron observations acquired by the Focal Plane Array (FPA) instrument on the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS): - Radiance images, noise maps, and effective resolution tables derived from reprocessed IRAS Additional/Pointed Observations. - Radiance images and noise maps derived from reprocessed IRAS Sky Survey Atlas scans. - JPEG-rendered images of the dust trail based on data in the ISSA Reject Set. These images are provided as documentation for future reference. These data support the analysis of the dust environment of Tempel 1 for the NASA Deep Impact Mission. IRAS Additional Observations (AO) --------------------------------- For these data, IRAS was aimed at Tempel 1 and images were acquired at microns 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns by the FPA. Russell Walker combined the images by satellite operations plan number, reprocessed the data, and produced adiance and noise maps in FITS format and effective beam resolutions in ASCII table format. An extensive discussion of these data, provided by Walker, is included in the documentation directory on this volume. IRAS Sky Survey Atlas (ISSA) Scans ---------------------------------- Most of the IRAS observation time was spent in survey mode. Walker identified ISSA scans that contained Tempel 1, then combined the scans by satellite operations plan number, reprocessed the data, and produced radiance and noise maps in FITS format. An extensive discussion of these data is included in the documentation directory on this volume. ISSA Dust Trail Images ---------------------- Fifty-six (56) images in the ISSA showed the dust trail of Tempel 1. These unprocessed images were converted from FITS to JPEG and included in this data set as documentation for future reference. A discussion of these images is included in the documentation directory on this volume. Volume Format ============= This volume has been formatted according to the ISO-9660 level 2 Interchange Standard. File Format =========== PDS label formats and documentation conform to standards as defined by the Planetary Data System Standards Reference (JPL Document D-7669, Part 2JPL D-7669, Part 2, August 1, 2003, Version 3.6) and the Planetary Science Data Dictionary (JPL D-7116, August 2002, Rev. E). All text documents and other meta information files such as descriptions, PDS object definitions and detached PDS labels are stream format files, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and a line feed character (ASCII 10) at the end of the record. This allows the files to be read by MS-DOS/Windows, Unix, and VMS operating systems. Casey Lisse provided the photometry tables based on Walker's reprocessed images. Ray Espiritu of Applied Coherent Technology Corporation produced data labels and index files under the direction of Stephanie McLaughlin, PDS-SBN/University of Maryland. All other files, such as catalog files, were produced by Stephanie McLaughlin, PDS-SBN/University of Maryland.
