NOTE: This is the original aareadme.txt file (1997-01-01) that was included
in the CD-ROM volume SL9_0001 that has now been split into individual
datasets. For simplicity and historical reasons it has been preserved.

This data set collection contains selected portions of Galileo instrument
observations of Jupiter during the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts in July
1994. For time comparison, near-IR images from Okayama Astrophysical
Observatory are included. In addition a statement of null results is
included for the Voyager 2 UVS instrument. Finally, International Ultra-
violet Explorer data from Jul 1993 - Aug 1994 data are also included.
This data set collection has been been collected, archived, processed,
and prepared for this prototype CD-WO by several teams associated with
the Voyager 2 and Galileo projects and coordinated by the PDS Small Bodies
Node. The primary intent of this data set collection is to represent the
data sets that are currently available for the study of the Comet
Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact events.
Currently seven groups of data are included in this data set volume.
These are:
OAO OASIS - Near-IR images for fragment K
Galileo PPR - Calibrated data sets for the G, H, L, and Q1
impact events.
Galileo SSI - Images (for G,K,N,R,W) from the crash period
Galileo NIMS - Data (for G,R)from crash observations as
reflectance tables assembled from the EDR
arrays and combined with calibration files
to get RIM times.
Galileo UVS - EDR data (for G,R)from crash observations and
- derived counts assembled from EDR arrays
and combined with RIM times for fragment G
IUE LWP - IUE data LWP (long-wave) and SWP (short-wave)
Voyager 2 UVS - Statement of null results
This data spans the time period July 17, 1993 to August 14, 1994.
The data files were submitted in both the PDS and FITS form. In the latter
case, a FITS to PDS translator program (F2P) has been used to create the
detached PDS labels for each corresponding FITS file. The data were checked
by manipulating the data with IDL routines developed at the Small Bodies Node
(PDSREAD). A complementary PDS to FITS translator program is also
included for completeness. Examples on the use of these routines and the
source code are posted on the Small Bodies Node home page under Software
Archives; also located at this address is the Quick Start Archiving guide.
In the DOCUMENT directory are explanatory text files as well as digitized
versions of the manuals that are in Postscript form with figures as TIFF
files. All document files and most labels contain an 80-byte fixed length
record, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and line feed (ASCII 10) as the
79th and 80th byte respectively. All the tabular files in the INDEX and
DOCUMENT directory are formatted according to PDS standards. It should be
noted that the index tables are formatted so that they may be read directly
into many database management systems. All fields are separated by commas,
and character fields are inclosed in double quotes (").
