N.B.: Raw and Calibrated data are sometimes referred to as EDR
(Engineering Data Records) and RDR (Reduced Data Records),
          respectively.

Raw data are in instrument units, typically binary integers referred to
as COUNTs or DATA NUMBER (DN). The raw data are stored in data files
with ancillary information such as observation time timestamps and
   observational geometry.

Calibrated data are in scientific or engineering units, such as
radiance (W/(m**2 um sr)) or impact particle mass (GRAMs). The
conversion to calibrated data from raw data was performed according
to an instrument performance model, which was developed from
scientific analysis of ground and in-flight calibrations, and which
is documented in files in this data set under the DOCUMENT/ and
CALIB/ subdirectories. Refer to DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT and
CALIB/CALINFO.TXT for pointers to more information.

Most science-oriented users will use the calibrated data, as those
data have the observations converted to physical units, and
instrument characteristics have been removed such as:

   - non-linearity of instrument counts w.r.t. measured quantity
   - inversion of instrument counts w.r.t. measured quantity
   - flat field (pixel to pixel) response

Possible reasons for using the raw data are the following:

   - investigation of the data calibration process
   - improvement of the data calibration process due to new data or
new approaches or new algorithms becoming available
   - simplicity or limitations of working with integer data
     - e.g. writing integer values to common image formats

Special note for MVIC Calibrated data sets
   --------------------------------------------

For MVIC images, the conversions to radiance and irradiance are
dependent on the spectrum of the target because of the varying
spectral response of the instrument detector. So the image data in
the calibrated FITS images are stored in units of calibrated DATA
NUMBER (DN), which means each raw pixel DN has had instrument
artifacts such as bias removed and its value is proportional to the
incident energy it received during the observation. Scene-dependent
conversion divisors are supplied, in the PDS labels and in the FITS
header, to convert from DN/s to radiance and to irradiance. Refer to
the MVIC section of the SOC Instrument ICD for more detail.
