EPOXI: Earth Observations |
Status: Archived
This data set set contains version 1.0 of calibrated narrow band filter images (350-950 nm) of Earth acquired by the Deep Impact High Resolution Visible CCD during the EPOCh phase of the EPOXI mission. Three sets of observations were acquired on 18-19 March, 28-29 May, and 4-5 June 2008 to characterize Earth as an analog for extrasolar planets. Each observing period lasted approximately 24 hours. HRIV images were acquired once per hour with the filters centered on 350, 750 and 950 nm, whereas the 450-, 550-, 650-, and 850-nm data were taken every 15 minutes. During the observing period in May, the Moon transited across Earth as seen from the spacecraft.
Additional Earth observations are being planned for the mission because two observing periods that were scheduled from late March through early May 2008 were canceled due to a telecommunications anomaly on board the spacecraft. These data will be added to a future version of this data set.
The observational data have been broken down into daily .TGZ (gzipped tar) files by by calibration type and year for easier downloading:
The calibration, catalogs, documents, indices, and supporting files for this data set can be downloaded here:
A file of MD5 checksums for the download files is available here.

An overview of the volume contents is provided in the aareadme.txt file.
Before attempting to use this data, users should read the errata.txt file.
Catalog files contain the overview information and parameters used in loading the PDS central catalog, specifically, or for developing other interfaces to the data outside of PDS. The information they contain, particularly in their descriptive text fields, should be clear, complete, and understandable to a research user who is not necessarily a mission or instrument specialist.
These files are located in the catalog/ directory. The directory contents are described by the catinfo.txt file.
The current documentation for the EPOXI and Deep Impact missions has been collected into a separate volume. The root of this volume is here. The contents are described in the aareadme file in the root of the documentation volume. However some specific documents are duplicated in this data set to assist with understanding the data and processing involved. These files are located in the document/ directory. The directory contents are described by the docinfo.txt file. Please note these documents may be older versions of those found in the EPOXI and Deep Impact documentation set.
The calib/ directory contains calibration files for these observations. The types of files available are described in the calinfo.txt file. Included are:
The data/ are divided by reduction level (RADREV for reversibly calibrated radiance and RAD for cleaned calibrated radiance) then date of observation, with subdirectories named by sequential day number under the data/radrev/2008 and data/rad/2008 subdirectories. The data are FITS files with multiple extensions including the primary image, a pixel quality map, and a signal-to-noise ratio map. Each data file has a detached PDS label (*.lbl). The data format is described in the Software Interface Specifications document.
The index/ directory contains the required PDS index of the files in the data directory, as well as the checksum file. The indxinfo.txt describes the directory contents:
