Phobos Sample Return

Phobos Sample Return is a planned Russian mission to Phobos with the goals of collecting soil samples from Phobos and returning them to Earth for scientific research, performing in situ and remote studies of Phobos including analysis of soil samples, and to study the Mars and its environment.

Feb 2012: The spacecraft launched successfully on Nov. 9, 2011 and went into Earth-orbit. However, it failed to leave orbit and eventually burned up in the Earth's atmosphere on Jan. 15, 2012. At this time, the Russian Federal Space Agency (became Roscosmos in 2015) is planning to try again by building a second spacecraft to be launched in 2016.

The archive of the Phobos Sample Return Mission (PhSRM) data will be prepared by the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences under SBN supervision. IKI will provide web access to the data and SBN will provide a mirror site for this archive.
